Interior Walls
Interior wall painting is the most common decoration task in Winchester properties. Getting walls right means thorough preparation, correct paint selection for the surface type, and clean cutting-in at every edge.
Fulflood Edwardian terraces on Bereweeke Avenue have walls with multiple rounds of old paint over original lime plaster. The plaster has moved with the building over time.
Modern emulsions that are too rigid will crack along the natural movement lines in the plaster. A flexible paint system matched to a lime surface keeps the finish intact across seasonal movement.
We wash walls before preparing, fill any cracks and holes, and sand back old ridges left by previous rollers. Two topcoats are standard on previously painted walls.
New or bare plaster surfaces need a sealing coat first.
Feature Wall Advice
A feature wall changes the character of a room without the cost and disruption of repainting everything. The right wall, in the right colour, anchors furniture placement and gives a room a clear focal point.
Cathedral Quarter Georgian townhouses often have a natural feature wall in the form of a chimney breast or a panelled end wall. We advise on which wall works best given the room proportions, window position, and natural light.
For feature walls in larger projects, we can combine with kitchen cabinet painting or home office painting during the same visit.
Plasterboard and New Plaster
New plasterboard and freshly skimmed walls need a sealing coat before any full-strength emulsion is applied. Skipping this produces a patchy, uneven finish that shows through multiple topcoats.
Badger Farm 1980s and 1990s properties are frequently extended with new plasterboard throughout. These surfaces are smooth and consistent but demand more edge discipline than older, slightly textured plaster walls.
Any imperfection in preparation is clearly visible on smooth plasterboard under raking light.
We follow the correct sealing coat and primer sequence on every new wall surface. See our plasterboard painting page for full detail on the preparation approach.
Textured and Artex Walls
Textured walls and Artex finishes are common in post-war Winchester properties, particularly Weeke semis. These surfaces need a specific approach that depends on the texture depth and age of the application.
Light Artex textures can be overpainted with a stipple or textured roller to blend the new coat into the existing pattern. Deep or heavy textures need a specialist textured masonry paint or compound to achieve a consistent result.
We assess each surface and advise on realistic outcomes before starting.
We do not sand or scrape Artex on properties built before 2000 without testing first. Some Artex products from this period contain materials that need managed removal.
We advise clients on this before any preparation begins.
Exterior Walls
Winchester has a wide variety of exterior wall types. Flint-faced facades are common in the Cathedral Quarter and older village properties.
Rendered exterior walls are typical on Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Hyde and Fulflood. Modern brick is standard on Badger Farm and Weeke post-war estates.
Each surface needs a different approach. Flint and lime-mortar facades need breathable masonry coatings.
Render needs checking for hollows and cracks before paint is applied. Brick walls must be assessed for moisture before sealing.
For a full exterior service including windows, woodwork, and masonry, see our interior painting pillar page for how wall painting fits into the wider project.

Here’s How It Works
1. Wall assessment
We inspect every wall surface. We note the material, existing finish, surface condition, and any cracks or damaged areas. We identify what preparation is needed and advise on the correct paint type for each surface.
2. Surface preparation
Walls are washed, cracks filled, and old ridges sanded back. Failing plaster is assessed and advice given on whether replastering is needed before decoration. New plaster receives a sealing coat at this stage.
3. Masking
Skirting, coving, switches, sockets, and window frames are masked. Floors and furniture are protected. We do not skip masking to save time.
4. Painting
Cutting-in at all edges first, then rolling the field. Two coats on previously painted surfaces. Three coats where walls are porous or the colour change is significant. We allow full drying time between coats.
5. Inspection and touch-up
We inspect under raking light after the final coat has dried. Every cut-in edge and every roller-line junction is checked. Touch-ups are completed before we leave.
