Fence Painting Services

Timber Fence Panels

Lap and feather-edge fence panels are the most common timber fencing in Winchester’s post-war estates. They are made from softwood and need regular treatment to hold their structure in the chalk downland climate.

Badger Farm and Stanmore properties typically have runs of twenty to forty panels or more. Without treatment, chalk-belt winters push moisture into the grain and summer UV dries the timber out.

After two or three seasons without treatment, softwood panels split along the grain and hold water rather than shed it.

We pressure-wash panels before treatment, removing algae, moss, and old surface treatment that would block the new product from penetrating. A clean, dry surface is the foundation of any fence treatment that lasts.

Our work on fence panels links with our wider exterior painting work for clients who need the house and garden treated together.

Close-Board Fencing

Close-board fencing is more robust than panel fencing and responds well to treatment when properly prepared. The horizontal fence supports and capping rail need as much attention as the boards themselves.

We treat the horizontal fence supports on the back face as well as the front. This is the face that is usually missed.

It is also where moisture sits longest after rain. A rail treated on both faces will outlast one that has only been painted from the visible side.

Close-board fencing on corner or boundary positions in Harestock and Littleton is exposed on two sides. It needs treatment on both faces wherever accessible.

We advise on access at the quotation visit.

Garden Gates

A garden gate is the most-used part of any fence run. It cycles through opening and closing hundreds of times a year, which means the paint or stain on the edges and frame takes more stress than panels.

We treat gate edges with a flexible primer before applying the finish coat. This prevents the most common failure mode: the finish cracking along the latch edge and water getting into the grain.

Hinges and latch hardware are masked during painting to keep the ironwork clean.

Where gates are set into a wall or brick pier, we mask the brickwork and check that the gate swings clear before and after treatment. Paint build-up on the edge of a gate can affect the swing.

We sand back to the correct clearance during preparation.

Fence Staining

Timber staining is a popular alternative to solid-colour fence paint where the natural wood grain is part of the garden’s character. Stain penetrates the timber rather than sitting on the surface, so it does not peel or flake as solid paints can.

We offer transparent and semi-transparent stains in a range of wood tones as well as coloured stains in contemporary shades. The right stain depends on the timber species, its condition, and the existing finish.

We advise on product choice at the quotation visit.

Stained fences are also easier to maintain than painted ones. When the time comes for retreatment, the surface needs cleaning rather than sanding back.

We confirm the maintenance schedule for whichever product we apply.

Protective Coatings

Some fence positions need more than a standard treatment. Fencing that borders a stream, sits in permanent shade, or is within the splash zone of a water feature needs a product with higher moisture resistance than standard preservative.

We also treat fence posts at ground level where timber is in direct contact with soil. This is the area that fails first on any fence structure.

A brush-applied preservative on the post base, renewed every two to three years, significantly extends the life of the whole fence run.

For new untreated timber, we apply a two-coat treatment system: a penetrating base coat followed by a finish coat in the chosen colour or stain. New timber absorbs product quickly.

The base coat ensures the finish has a stable foundation. See our deck painting and shed painting pages for related outdoor timber services.
