Deck Painting Services
Decking Boards
Decking boards are the most exposed part of any deck. They take the full weight of foot traffic and sit in direct contact with the weather throughout the year.
Softwood boards in the Kings Worthy area face full chalk downland exposure. Without treatment, they will grey and crack within two seasons.
A penetrating oil or specialist deck coating on a properly cleaned surface is the only reliable fix.
We sand back weathered boards and treat any split grain with a flexible wood filler. We then apply a breathable deck oil or coating in the finish you choose.
Boards are left with a uniform, protected surface that sheds water rather than absorbing it. We bring our exterior painting expertise to every deck job.
Balustrades
Deck balustrades are typically thinner timber than the boards. They weather faster because they have more surface area relative to their mass.
Posts, rails, and spindles all need individual preparation before any finish is applied. Horizontal rails trap moisture along the top edge.
We treat these with a water-repellent primer before finishing to stop water sitting against the grain.
A finished balustrade that is properly primed and sealed will hold its colour for several seasons before it needs refreshing. We include balustrade work in all full-deck quotations.
Steps and Handrails
Steps get the heaviest use of any part of a deck. The leading edge of each tread takes concentrated foot traffic and wears faster than the flat boards.
We use a hardwearing deck coating on treads, with an anti-slip additive as standard on external steps. Handrails are sanded, primed, and finished to match the rest of the deck.
We also link with our fence painting team where jobs include adjacent garden structures.
If your steps are in direct contact with soil or paving, we apply a moisture-blocking primer on the underside of each tread during preparation. This prevents the most common source of early failure on external steps.
Deck Staining
Deck staining preserves the natural grain of the timber rather than hiding it under a solid colour. It is the preferred finish for hardwood decks where the grain itself is part of the appeal.
We offer transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colour stains. Transparent finishes show the most grain.
Solid stains cover more imperfections but still penetrate the timber. Both options breathe, which matters in the chalk downland climate where moisture movement through timber is constant.
Recoating a stained deck is easier than repainting a solid finish. When the time comes, we can clean and re-stain without a full strip.
We advise on which stain grade suits your timber and exposure at the quoting stage.
Anti-Slip Finishes
An anti-slip finish is worth considering on any deck that gets wet or is used by children or older family members. It is essential on external steps.
We add a fine grit additive to the topcoat during application. This creates a textured surface that provides grip without changing the appearance of the deck.
The additive is blended into the coating rather than scattered on top, so it does not wear off with cleaning.
Anti-slip treatment is included as standard on steps and can be specified for any board run where slip risk is a concern. It adds no significant cost to the overall quote.
