Garage Door Painting Services

Timber Garage Doors

Timber garage doors — whether side-hinged or up-and-over — need the same preparation discipline as any other exterior timber surface. We strip back loose or flaking paint, sand to sound timber, fill any splits or surface cracks along the grain, and apply an oil-based or specialist exterior timber primer before the finish coats.

In Winchester’s chalk valley climate, the seasonal cycle of dry summers and wet winters opens micro-cracks in old paint build-up year on year. Two full coats of exterior gloss or satin finish are standard, producing a result that holds for five to eight years with good preparation.

Metal and Steel Doors

The most common failure on metal garage doors is rust bleed-through — a sign that rust was present at the painting stage and not treated before finishing. We assess the door for corrosion before quoting. Surface rust is treated with a rust converter and sealed with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any finish coat goes on.

Wire brushing removes loose scale and prepares the surface for primer adhesion. The primer is the most important coat on a metal door — it is what stops corrosion returning. We apply a durable exterior metal topcoat in the colour of your choice once the primer has cured.

GRP and Composite Doors

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the most common material in modern composite garage doors. It is smooth, non-porous, and does not absorb primer or paint like timber does. A standard primer applied directly to GRP will not bond correctly and the finish will peel.

We use specialist adhesion primers formulated for composite surfaces — these create a mechanical key on the smooth substrate before the topcoat goes on. Colour choices are wide: any exterior finish colour can be applied once the correct primer system is in place.

uPVC Doors

uPVC garage doors can be painted successfully, but only with the right primer. Standard masonry or wood primers will not adhere to the smooth uPVC surface and will lift within months. We use specialist plastic primer systems designed for non-porous substrates, which create the adhesion layer the finish coat needs.

When done correctly, a painted uPVC garage door holds its finish for five to eight years before a refresh is needed. Colour options range from standard white or cream through to contemporary grey, anthracite, or black — popular choices on Winchester’s period properties.

One Visit, Consistent Finish

Garage doors are frequently done as part of a wider exterior repaint. Doing both at the same time means one visit and a consistent finish across the whole front elevation. See our exterior painting page for full details on exterior repaints across Winchester.

For work on other exterior timber — fascias, soffits, window frames, and garden structures — see our wood painting page.

How Garage Door Painting Works

1. Assessment

We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.

2. Surface Preparation

Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased.

3. Priming

Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.

4. Finish Coats

Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.

5. Final Check

We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Winchester

Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door.

Typical Range: £180 to £450

Most single garage doors fall within this range depending on material and condition. Double garage doors add 50–80% to the price of the equivalent single door.

Pricing by Door Type

  • Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
  • Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
  • GRP or composite door: £200–320
  • uPVC door: £180–280

Double Garage Doors

Double garage doors in any material add 50–80% to the above ranges. The increase reflects additional preparation time, primer, and finish coats required to cover both panels properly.

Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end. Call 01962 587222 to arrange a site visit and fixed quote.
