Wood Painting Services

Interior Hardwood

Interior hardwood floors, staircases, and fitted joinery in period Winchester properties are some of the finest timber in the city. Original hardwood floors in Cathedral Quarter townhouses and Kings Worthy period farmhouses are worth preserving with the right finish rather than painting over with a standard paint.

We apply hardwood floor oils, varnishes, and lacquers depending on the timber species and the floor’s use. An oil finish is the most sympathetic to original hardwood because it penetrates the timber and feeds it.

A lacquer provides a harder, more wear-resistant surface for high-traffic areas. We advise on the appropriate finish at the quotation visit after assessing the species, condition, and existing finish.

For interior hardwood joinery including staircases, architraves, and panelling, we use a preparation process suited to the timber. Old varnish is stripped or abraded before any new finish is applied.

Applying a new varnish over old without preparation produces a cloudy finish that peels within months. Our interior wood work connects with our wider exterior painting service for clients who want interior and exterior work done in the same visit.

Exterior Timber

Exterior timber on Winchester’s period farmhouses in Kings Worthy and Headbourne Worthy needs a different product category to standard exterior emulsion or gloss. Fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and outbuilding frames on these properties are exposed to full chalk downland weather on rural-edge plots.

Properties on Springvale Road and Church Lane in Kings Worthy and Headbourne Worthy have substantial external timber. This includes oversized bargeboards, deep fascias, and large outbuilding frames.

These need an oil-based or specialist coating that penetrates the timber rather than sitting on the surface. A breathable, flexible finish moves with the timber through seasonal moisture changes without cracking.

We identify the timber species before selecting a product. Oak, softwood pine, and cedar behave differently and need different preparation and finish systems.

Applying a softwood primer to oak will not adhere correctly to the tannin-rich surface. We select and apply the correct primer for each timber type.

See our masonry painting page for work on adjacent masonry surfaces where timber and render meet.

Staining and Varnishing

Staining and varnishing brings out the character of the grain rather than hiding it under a solid colour. It is the preferred finish for hardwood floors, interior joinery, exposed structural beams, and garden furniture where the timber itself is a design feature.

We offer water-based and solvent-based stains in a full range of colours from natural wood tones through to grey and charcoal contemporary shades. Water-based stains are low-odour and suitable for most interior applications.

Solvent-based products provide deeper penetration and are suited to exterior hardwood and very dense interior timbers.

Varnishing over stain needs careful timing. The stain must be fully dry before varnish is applied.

We confirm drying times for the specific product and conditions before applying the varnish coat. Rushing this step is the most common cause of varnish lifting over stain within months of application.

Stripping and Restoration

Original timber joinery in Winchester’s period properties is sometimes obscured under layers of paint applied over many decades. A painted-over original pine staircase or oak door surround can often be restored to its natural finish by stripping and refinishing.

We use chemical strippers, heat guns, and mechanical sanders depending on the profile of the joinery and the build-up present. Moulded profiles are stripped by hand with shaped scrapers after chemical softening.

Flat sections are stripped mechanically. The process is time-consuming but the result on quality original timber is worth it.

After stripping, we inspect the bare timber for damage, open joints, and any repairs needed before finishing. Original period timber in good condition, once stripped and properly oiled or varnished, will look as good as it did when it was installed.

We advise on whether stripping is worthwhile at the quotation visit based on the species, condition, and depth of the existing finish.

Bespoke Joinery

Bespoke joinery including built-in shelving, fitted wardrobes, kitchen units, and garden room interiors needs a finish level that matches the quality of the joinery itself. We finish bespoke joinery in eggshell, satin, or lacquer depending on the client’s choice.

Preparation on new bespoke joinery is straightforward compared to period restoration. New softwood or MDF joinery is filled at nail holes and screw heads, sanded, primed, and then finished in two full coats.

We work in sequence, cutting in first and then applying the roller or brush coat to flat panels to achieve a consistent sheen level throughout.

For garden rooms and outdoor joinery installations, we apply an exterior-grade oil or stain suited to the timber species used in the build. Many bespoke garden structures use cedar or treated softwood.

Both need different product systems and we confirm the correct choice with the joinery installer before starting. See our fence painting page for related outdoor timber treatment.
