Radiator Painting Services

Cast Iron Radiators

Cast iron radiators are common in Winchester’s Victorian and Edwardian properties. Many are original to the house and have been repainted multiple times over the decades.

Old cast iron radiators typically carry layers of oil-based paint that has yellowed and become brittle. When the radiator heats up, the metal expands.

Old paint that has lost its flexibility will crack and flake. Proper preparation stops the new finish lifting within the first heating season.

This means sanding back loose material and applying a heat-resistant primer.

We clean the surface with a degreasing agent before any sanding begins. This removes decades of oil and grime that prevent primer from bonding properly.

Steel Panel Radiators

Steel panel radiators are found in post-war and modern Winchester properties, including Weeke semis and Badger Farm homes. They develop surface rust at chips and around fixings.

Left untreated, surface rust spreads under the paint film and causes blistering.

We sand back to clean metal at any rust spots, apply a rust-inhibiting primer, and finish with a heat-resistant topcoat. This stops the rust from spreading and gives the surface a consistent finish.

Steel panel radiators are generally easier to prepare than column radiators because the surfaces are flat. However, they still need a heat-resistant product to prevent yellowing when the heating runs.

Column Radiators

Stanmore 1930s homes on Stanmore Lane and Romsey Road (south) frequently still have original column radiators. These carry thick layers of old oil-based paint that flake when the radiators heat up.

Proper preparation stops the new finish lifting within the first heating season. This means sanding back loose material and applying a heat-resistant primer.

Column radiators have complex profiles with curved sections, deep recesses between columns, and narrow gaps that are difficult to reach. We use specialist brushes sized for these tight spaces.

Skipping the gaps produces a finish that looks sound from a distance but reveals uncleaned and unprimed metal up close.

For interior painting work across the same rooms, we can combine radiator painting with walls and woodwork during a single project visit.

Heat-Resistant Paint

Standard emulsion and standard gloss will yellow and peel on a working radiator. Heat-resistant radiator paint is formulated to withstand the temperatures that domestic radiators reach during normal operation.

We use heat-resistant products on every radiator we paint. These come in a limited but growing range of colours.

Most standard whites and off-whites are available in heat-resistant formulations. For other colours, we advise on availability before quoting.

The first time a freshly painted radiator is heated, there may be a faint smell as the paint cures fully. This is normal and passes quickly.

We advise clients on this at the handover stage.

Colour Matching

Radiators in period Winchester rooms do not have to stay white. Darker radiators that blend with wall colours are increasingly popular.

Column radiators painted in an accent colour can become a feature in themselves.

We advise on how a proposed radiator colour will sit against the wall colour and skirting. A colour that reads well in isolation can look different when surrounded by the room.

We bring samples where possible.

Here’s How It Works

1. Radiator assessment

We inspect the existing finish on each unit. We check for flaking, rust, or areas where old paint has lifted. We advise on whether the existing surface can be overcoated or needs stripping back.

2. Cooling and preparation

Radiators must be cold before work begins. We schedule around heating cycles where needed. Old loose paint is sanded back. Rust spots are treated with rust-inhibiting primer at this stage.

3. Degreasing

Radiator surfaces accumulate oil and household dust that must be removed before priming. We clean every surface with a specialist degreaser before any primer goes on.

4. Priming

Heat-resistant primer is applied to the entire radiator surface. Column radiators need careful work in the recesses between columns. We allow the primer to cure fully before topcoat.

5. Finish coats and curing

One to two topcoats of heat-resistant paint are applied. We advise on the first heating cycle after painting, which allows the paint to cure fully and may produce a brief smell.
