Plasterboard Painting Services

Freshly Plastered Walls

New plaster is highly absorbent and cannot take a standard emulsion coat straight from the tin. Applying full-strength paint directly to fresh plaster seals the surface unevenly and causes patchy, flashing results.

The correct approach is a sealing coat: emulsion diluted with water applied across the entire surface. This reduces suction evenly and allows the topcoats to go on flat and consistent.

We allow the sealing coat to dry fully before applying the first topcoat.

Badger Farm 1980s and 1990s modern semis on Badger Farm Road are frequently extended and refurbished. These extensions introduce new smooth plasterboard alongside existing older plaster walls.

Treating both surfaces correctly at the same time requires two different preparation approaches.

Sealing Coat Application

The sealing coat is a critical step that many clients are unaware of. Skipping it produces a finish that flashes under raking light and shows uneven colour even after two full topcoats.

We dilute the first coat at a ratio matched to the porosity of the surface. Very new plaster or raw plasterboard needs a higher dilution.

Skim-finished plasterboard needs a slightly lower dilution. We assess each surface before mixing.

For wider interior painting projects covering both new and existing rooms, we sequence the work so that new surfaces get their sealing coat at the right time.

First and Second Fix

New builds and major refurbishments need painting at two stages. First fix happens before skirting, architrave, and door frames are fitted.

Second fix follows after all joinery is installed and the room is otherwise complete.

Getting the sequence right saves time and produces better results. Painting walls before fitting skirting means no masking required at floor level.

Second fix finishes woodwork after everything else is done, producing clean edges without overspray risk.

We work with builders and project managers to fit painting into the build programme at the correct stage.

New Build and Extension

Plasterboard throughout means smooth, consistent walls but with no margin for poor preparation. The flatness of plasterboard makes any surface defect visible.

Screw fixings, tape joints, and any filling must be sanded flush before primer goes on.

Badger Farm properties built in the 1980s and 1990s have smooth plasterboard throughout. Plasterboard needs the correct sealing primer before topcoats or the surface will flash and show roller marks.

Getting the finish right on smooth board demands more edge discipline than textured or imperfect older walls.

See our ceiling painting page for information on plasterboard ceiling preparation in new build and extension projects.

Plaster Repair and Preparation

Damaged plasterboard is common in older extensions where movement or impact has caused surface cracking or hollow areas. We cut out damaged sections, patch with new board or filler, and tape joints correctly before priming.

Filled areas absorb primer differently from the surrounding surface unless they are sanded flush and sealed. We prime repairs separately before full-room priming to reduce the chance of visible patches showing through the finish.

Our bathroom painting page covers wet-room plasterboard preparation, which needs moisture-resistant board and a different primer approach.

Here’s How It Works

1. Surface assessment

We inspect every wall and ceiling panel. We identify screw fixings, tape joints, filled areas, and any hollow or damaged sections. We note existing paint or primer if present and assess what preparation is required.

2. Repair and filling

Screw heads are filled and sanded flush. Tape joints are checked and reinforced if raised. Any hollow or damaged sections are cut out and patched. Filler is applied, allowed to dry fully, and sanded flat.

3. Sealing coat

Fresh plasterboard and new skim plaster receive a diluted sealing coat before any full-strength paint is applied. This is allowed to dry completely before the next stage.

4. Priming

A full-coverage primer coat goes on across every surface. Repairs and filled areas are checked under raking light to ensure they are flat and sealed. Any areas that need a second pass are addressed before topcoats.

5. Topcoats and inspection

Two full topcoats are applied. We inspect every surface under good light after the final coat. Touch-ups are completed before we leave.
