Rendered Walls
Rendered walls are the most common masonry painting job in Winchester’s post-war and inter-war properties. A well-applied masonry coat protects render from frost damage.
It seals hairline cracks and refreshes the colour of the elevation.
The key requirement in Winchester is breathability. Properties on chalk foundations draw moisture upward through the surface throughout autumn and winter.
A paint that seals the surface traps this moisture in the render. This causes blistering, cracking, and early finish failure.
We use breathable masonry paints that allow moisture vapour to escape without letting liquid water in.
Before any paint is applied, we treat biological growth including moss, algae, and lichen with a mould treatment. Growth must be killed at the root and removed, not painted over.
Painting over live growth is the most common reason rendered walls bubble and peel within eighteen months. Our masonry work links with our wood painting service for clients who need external timber treated at the same visit.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick on exterior elevations can be painted or left natural. Where painting is the goal, the preparation is more involved than on render.
The irregular brick surface needs full coverage without blocking the mortar joints.
We use a masonry brush with a stippling action on brick to work the paint into the surface profile. This gives a consistent colour without bridging the joints.
Mortar joint depth is maintained after painting. This is particularly important on period properties where the character of the brickwork is part of the elevation.
On Abbotts Barton Victorian semis, the brick detailing around window surrounds and string courses needs individual attention. We cut around these features carefully to preserve the definition between the main wall and the decorative brickwork.
Stone Facades
Stone facades on Winchester’s older properties, including flint-and-brick elevations in Fulflood and the Cathedral Quarter, require a different approach to render or smooth brick. The surface is irregular, highly absorbent in the mortar, and almost non-absorbent at the flint or stone face itself.
Painting flint is generally not recommended unless the stone is already painted and needs refreshing. Where flint elevations are to remain unpainted, we treat the mortar joints only with a clear masonry consolidant to stop any deterioration.
Where the whole elevation is to be painted, we use a product with very high coverage and elasticity to bridge the irregular surface without cracking.
We advise on the most appropriate approach for each stone elevation at the quotation visit. The goal is always to protect the building fabric without accelerating any existing moisture movement problem.
Breathable Coatings
The chalk downland geology beneath Winchester means breathable coatings are not a premium option. They are the standard requirement on almost all period properties in the city and surrounding villages.
A breathable masonry paint has a very fine pore structure that allows water vapour to pass through in both directions. During dry periods, moisture that has collected in the surface during wet weather can escape.
During rain, liquid water cannot penetrate inward in significant quantities. This is the balance required on chalk-foundation properties.
We use products from manufacturers who independently test vapour permeability. Not all paints labelled as breathable perform to the same standard.
On properties with active damp issues or recent lime mortar repairs, we select the most vapour-permeable product available. We also advise on complementary measures such as clearing blocked vents and improving drainage at the base of the wall.
Biological Growth Treatment
Biological growth on exterior masonry is a consistent problem in the chalk downland climate. The chalk surface holds moisture, mild winters are common, and algae, moss, and lichen establish quickly on porous surfaces.
We treat growth with a mould treatment before preparation. It is applied, left to work for a specified dwell time, and then the dead growth is removed by scrubbing and pressure washing.
This process eliminates the root system rather than just the visible surface growth. Painting over untreated growth produces a finish with a short lifespan.
On properties with persistent growth, we recommend a masonry treatment applied over the finish coat. It remains active in the dried paint film and inhibits regrowth.
See our fence painting and exterior painting pages for related services where biological growth is also a factor.
