Door Painting Services

Interior Flush Doors

Flush doors are the most common internal door in post-war properties. They have a smooth face over a hollow or solid core and take paint well when the surface is properly prepared.

The most common issue on flush doors is a build-up of old paint around the edges. This causes the door to stick in the frame through the seasons.

We sand back the edges as part of preparation. This restores clearance and gives a clean surface for the new coat.

We apply a sealing coat to bare or stripped surfaces before any topcoat. This seals the surface evenly and prevents patchy sheen from uneven absorption.

Our work on flush doors connects to our wider exterior painting capability for clients who need internal and external work quoted together.

Panelled Doors

Panelled doors have more surface variety than flush doors. The panels, rails, and stiles each need to be cut in and finished separately to avoid runs at the intersections.

On period properties, panelled doors often have multiple layers of old paint in recessed areas. We rake out any cracks along the grain and fill before sanding.

This avoids the most common fault: old cracks that telegraph back through the new finish within a few months.

We finish panelled doors in a sequence that works with the geometry: panels first, then the rails, then the stiles. This gives clean edges at every intersection.

The finish reads as though it was applied in one flowing coat.

Door Frames and Architraves

A freshly painted door against an unpainted or tired frame looks unfinished. We include door frames and architraves in all door painting quotations as standard unless the client specifies otherwise.

Architraves on period properties in Winchester often have damage at the corners where the mitre joints have opened. We fill and sand these before painting.

A sealed, filled architrave holds paint for several years longer than one painted over open joints.

We also work on skirting boards and other joinery at the same visit where the client wants a consistent finish throughout the room. This is more cost-effective than separate visits for each element.

Fire Doors

Fire doors need specific products and preparation. The intumescent seal around the door edge must not be painted over or it will not perform in a fire.

We are familiar with the requirements and work around the seal correctly.

We use water-based eggshell or satin finishes on fire doors in most residential settings. These are low-odour, quick-drying, and durable enough for high-use doors.

The colour can be matched to the rest of the joinery in the property.

Where fire doors have been incorrectly painted and the seal is damaged, we advise the client before proceeding. Replacing a compromised seal is straightforward.

We can arrange this as part of the preparation.

Wardrobe Doors

Built-in wardrobe doors are painted rather than replaced in most period properties. A full repaint is a fraction of the cost of new fitted wardrobes and can completely change the look of a room.

Flush wardrobe doors are straightforward. Panelled or routed wardrobe fronts take more time, but the preparation and finish process is the same as for standard panelled doors.

We work in situ and protect the carpet and surrounding joinery throughout.

For wardrobe doors with a louvred or slatted front, we apply finish with a brush rather than a roller. This takes longer but gives full coverage and prevents the unfinished look that rolled louvres produce.

See our front door painting and window frame painting pages for related joinery services.
